Are you thinking about upgrading your business phone system to VoIP? It can be a daunting task, but it doesn’t have to be. We’ve got you covered with this 5-step VoIP implementation checklist.

First thing’s first if you’re new to the VoIP world: it’s not your traditional phone system. Instead of placing calls over copper-wire landlines, VoIP works over the internet by converting your voice into a digital signal.

With VoIP, you don’t need to pay for extra landline service or even for more internet service. VoIP works just fine over your typical broadband internet connection, so you get better call quality and a cheaper phone bill to boot.

Without further ado, here’s your VoIP implementation guide:

VoIP requirements

Network bandwidth

Again, VoIP works over the internet, so you’ll need a solid and reliable internet connection. However, VoIP doesn’t use as much bandwidth as you might think.

For each line of VoIP service, you can expect to need about 100 kb/s (0.1 Mb/s), so for 10 lines you’ll need at least 1 Mb/s. For businesses, most broadband connections will be in the hundreds of Mb if not into the Gb (1000 Mb).

Low latency

Having a reliable internet connection is just as important as having a speedy connection. You can test your connection’s reliability by doing a speed test and keeping an eye on the ping. You’ll want a ping under 70 milliseconds to ensure a stable VoIP connection.

Wired over wireless

To even further increase reliability, we highly recommend using a wired ethernet connection over a WiFi connection. If you want to take it a step further, you should invest in a Power over Ethernet (PoE) switch to deliver data and power over one wire.

Data prioritization

Even if your network is stable and speedy, you can’t always account for upticks in bandwidth usage from software updates and other data-intensive activities. You can prioritize your voice connection with a Quality of Service setup on your router, which your VoIP service provider can help with.
